How did you get started teaching?
When I was 9 years old I had a young teacher with a kind soul, infectious laugh & terrific smile. She had recently returned from backpacking around the world and was filled with amazing stories and a zeal for life. I remember her vividly. At lunch she would let the mood of her students guide her in what activity she chose. Some days she would lead us in a loud aerobics class jumping around to UB40, to this day I cannot hear them and not smile. Other days we would play poker with little math blocks for chips while the rain poured outside. Some days she would have us sit campfire style and she would tell wild stories of far off places and creatures we found hard to imagine. My favorite days though were the yoga days. She would guide us gently through slowing down and finding our breath and eventually into gentle meditation. Looking back now as an adult I am in awe of how patient and kind this woman was. How truly gifted she was. She gave so much of her soul and we all benefited so greatly from her kindness. I also wonder if the universe sent her to me to help me remember some magic through some tough times ahead. Some of my last moments of childhood innocence were shared with her and I am forever grateful that she gave me the gift of yoga.
Since then I have practiced yoga off and on throughout my life. In times of stress I always find my way back to a studio and the calm that comes from finding a teacher to help guide you back to peace with the universe. I have experienced many different kinds of teachers and loved them all for their differences. It is time now for me to share that gift with others.
