Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
What are your goals? What's your experience? What's your level of determination? Are you willing to be honest? If you can answer my questions truthfully, I'll know exactly where you're at as a student, and meet you there. That will make optimal your training. You won't be in a class of 30 students and slip through the cracks.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am an army veteran who served in Iraq with the army infantrty. I currently train at an MMA gym. I cage fight and have years of experience. I am also a clinician with a masters degree trained in several evidence based practices aimed at empowering change.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I have a $100 non negotiable rate for the first lesson. After that we can decide if it's a good fit and plan other lessons around a discounted price.
How did you get started teaching?
I've always been great at teaching. The army taught me most of my leadership skills. I started teaching before I knew anything about martial arts. Once I knew a little about martial arts and self defense I was able to easily teach others.
What types of students have you worked with?
Students of all shapes and sizes and experience.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Avoid anyone who tells you they can teach you how to not get hit. Embrace those who know getting knocked down is part of the journey.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Start asking yourself, "Do I really want to change my life?" Training is about learning where you are strong, and where you are weak. Knowing that will accelerate all aspects of your life.
