What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't fall for what's cool. Don't do yoga because your friend does a particular style of yoga. Your body / mind/ soul may not like what theirs do. Try out several classes, styles and teachers before joining any membership. Follow that what's right for your overall wellness. Any one who forces you into poses before you are ready isn't doing yoga. Research good teachers in the area if you are new. Novice students can't figure out where a new teacher went wrong and how to prevent injuries. An experienced teacher will be certified from an established school and having a yoga alliance credential. Look for these in addition. You don't want to do yoga with someone having just 10 hours of personal training certification. Yoga Teachers put in atleast 200 hours for their Yoga Alliance credential.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Fears, Queries, Health concerns, surgeries, injuries or if applicable pregnancy. While yoga is yoga, your conditions and limitations require compassionate assistance and proper guidance for delivering quality service. Don't shy away from being honest to your teacher. Teachers will not be responsible for any yoga injuries and liabilities from lack of information from your end. We care for our students and your information will be confidential if you don't announce in class but whisper in teacher's ears. We accomodate your needs and tailor class with alerts and modifications when we are notified before class commences.
