About
We proudly practice and teach the traditional Isshin-Ryu self-defense style of karate founded by Tatsu Shimabuku; as it has been passed down by Angi Uezu. Our goal is to help build strong self disciplined independent and interdependent empowered individuals. Developing the ability to defend themselves, and others with effective natural techniques while cultivating the sense of responsibility, comradery and accountability through hard work and team work. Sensei Lee and Sensei Rhonda have over 56 combinedyear training and over 50 years instruction.
I believe that practicing a disciplined martial art with genuinely caring instructors can help every individual find growth and further ingnite their unique inner Spark. We aspire to empower students individually and as our team. Its very rewarding to see the growth of our students; their mental, physical, and personal inner spirituality. We work to help the young and old alike in many aspects of their lives; but the best part of our dojo is the family-like comradery that develops amongst the students and their families.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first thing is to help the student gain self confidence in a new environment. Helping them recognize that stepping on the floor to try is the mat courageous step in their karate journey. Everything starts with ONE. We work with them on a fun and cautious manner to walk through the "How To's" of an effective punch, block and kick, as well as posture and movement. Within just a couple is weeks, students move forward and grow with little apprehension and that's when the advancing on skill and knowledge really begins. I ALWAYS suggest that when a person decides to try something new, you commit to at east 3 months. That timeframe will allow you mind and body to adjust and relax the uncertainty. If an activity doesn't feel right after the 3 months, it's probably not for you.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've been training in Isshin Ryu for about 19 years, and instructing for about 14 years. During my martial arts training, we as students always take into consideration that we share what we've learned. I've assisted instructing, developed and held a number of personal self defense programs throughout the years for various ages. In 2009 I attained my personal trainers certification, where I also took a martial arts instructors certificate course. I have been given an Isshin Ryu instructors certificate by an accredited Isshin Ryu organization.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard pricing is quarterly billing at a discounted rate from the monthly cost. A student's first quarter (3 months) is $150 for ages 9+, subsequent quarterly rate is $225, Young Dragons ages 5-8 first quarter (3 months) is $75, and subsequent rate is $100.
The standard monthly cost is $100 for 9+, $75 for Young Dragons. I offer a active and veteran service discount of %20. This is good for a large group of service capacities and was expanded due to the widened appreciation to health and safety service related jobs. I also offer a family discount for additional family members, as well as volunteer instructor discount. Any Isshin Ryu black belt is never charged a tuition, and other black belts only play $50 per month. Anyone aged 55 & up can train for $55/month, one day per week.
How did you get started teaching?
Students like as I had, begin assisting in various capacities during class and in other self defense programs and seminars.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with people of all ages just about. The age of 18 months to 81 years young. Something you learn as a long time instructor is that each person learns in their own time and own way. I've found that children (anyone for that matter) who may have a mental, sight physical and or learning disability can learn to defend themselves. The expectation of each student is always set just above their self presumed abilities, and in time they meet that expectation which creates the opening for more growth in a number of ways.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The most important aspect of self defense and self discipline is not the rank you receive in your practice; but rather it's the development of character alongside theathe to make disciplined decisions and use effective techniques from effective practice, perseverance and instruction.
