About

For over 20 years we have taught men, women and children verbal and physical self-defense skills through classes, workshops and seminars. Our mission it to help those without the time, money or both to learn some basic self-defense skills in a short period of time.

Using a combination of books and online videos, we are able to train our students to a certain level of proficiency before they continue with an instructor in-person for hands-on experience.

As a 5th degree martial arts master in the Korean styles of both TaeKwonDo and Hapkido, Master Pete Canavan can impart valuable knowledge and skills in minutes, not months. This enables anyone without prior experience the ability to become safer, more confident and enjoy a greater sense of well-being through education and training.

Master Pete has written 5 books on safety and self-defense, and has created an online community for college safety at https://CampusSafetyUniversity.com. Visit for your free online safety guide.

    Frequently asked questions

We will evaluate the needs and goals of each student to ensure that they receive the skills and training that they desire.  If we cannot help or if they have unrealistic expectations, we will try to correct that or not accept them as a student for in-person training.

Our online videos at https://LearnSelfDefenseOnline.com and YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/BestSuccessTraining/videos) contain dozens of videos for improving personal safety both online and offline.  We also recently started a podcast, "Safety Talk" that covers all types of safety concerns.  We interview experts from all areas of security and share their expertise with our listeners.  Visit http://safetytalkpodcast.com for more info and to listen to past episodes.  The show will also be available on most podcast platforms including iTunes, iHeart Radio and others.

Depending upon if the lessons are part of our regular classes, a workshop/seminar, keynotes or private lessons, we have different pricing.  Contact us for more information.

Part of learning involves teaching - it allows you to increase your command of material when you teach it to others.  After achieving my 1st degree black belt, as I requirement for advancement, I began teaching.  First children, then adults.  To date I have taught hundreds of men, women and children.

From 5 to 75, we teach students of every age, skill level and capability.  All improve physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  Children show the fastest improvement in many areas including fortitude, discipline, confidence and respect.

I regularly write articles and am interviewed on various nationwide programs with regard to my personal experience.  The most recent event I am fond of was conducting a safety workshop last summer for young children at a summer camp to empower them with the knowledge and skills to improve their safety.  They had fun while they learned!

Have realistic expectations of what your goals are.  You won't become a ninja in a week!  Establish a good foundation with basic skills practiced slowly and with proper form, then as you progress speed and power will follow.  Research the type of training you are looking for - for example, traditional martial arts, kickboxing, MMA or self-defense.  They are not the same and you need to understand what your goals are.  Unless you are training in traditional martial arts or self-defense, everything else has rules, and in a fight for your life, there are no rules!

Find out what the teacher's experience is, who they learned from, how the student progresses, and the pace at which they progress.  Some schools simply make you attend a certain number of classes before advancing you.  That is not the right way to do it.  Mastery of certain skills, or at least a good command of them should be the benchmark for advancement, not how long you have been a student.
