Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I take progress slow. It's better to learn correct versus quick. I am patient and answer questions. If I don't know an answer I will find one.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a US Army Veteran, a certified Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, Baguazhang and qigong instructor, I have a certification as a Physical Therapy Technician, i have certifications as a 3D Animator, a concept artist, an associates in Graphic Design and 3D Animation, i have CPR and First Aid certofication, I was a Combat Lifesaver, I have over 17 years experience in customer service.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching as a student instructor at Tien Shan Tzi in El Paso Texas. From there I taught at a Recreation Center and Senior Center. When I moved to San Antonio, I started teaching for the YMCA. Teaching is my passion. I love seeing people progress and heal.
What types of students have you worked with?
All types from different interests, abilities, back grounds and languages from ages 13 to 97
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I help organize the Texas Push Hands and Light Sparring events in San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Houston and El Paso.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure the instructor can teach what you are looking for. If I'm not the correct instructor for you, I will help you find one. Taijiquan is for everyone. I can help if you are looking for taijiquan as a martial art, or are looking for spirituality or to improve your health. I can help you find good local teachers if I am too far or not your style. I cannot help you with magical chi powers or unrealistic expectations, but again, I can find someone who will.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do you want? People practice taijiquan for health, hobby, spirituality, self defense, martial arts, combatives, dance, performance, and to pretend. Once you know what you want, talk to the students. Then talk to the teacher. Make sure they teach all the aspects you are looking for.
