She has had a passion for dance since age five and loves modern, lyrical, liturgical, and contemporary dance. Her background in dance eventually led her to other movement forms, including yoga. It was not until 2014 that Asia Vianna encountered yoga at a trial class at her local dance studio in Durham, North Carolina. From there she was introduced to the mindfulness of yoga at a small community studio. Upon moving to Hyattsville, Maryland in 2015, Asia Vianna developed a personal practice of yoga at Love Yoga Studio ... View Profile

After a stressful and exhausting work day, I entered a yoga studio in Washington DC for my first time in September 2007.  The next day I went back, and again the next day...and again...and again...okay you catch my drift! One class at a time, one day at a time, yoga became a part of my everyday life and completely changed me both mentally and physically!  I have learned to deal with life and changes in a much more open way, and of course have also become much more flexible over the years. In 2015 after much inward reflection and the realization that I want to pass this passion on to others, I pursued a 200-hour teacher training, yog ... View Profile

Most recently I traveled to India on a project with Photographers Without Borders. I am currently working on my Ph.D. which is looking at how photography is being used as a tool for social change.   I believe photography is an artful way of storytelling.   You can't learn about photography from readi ... Please see my webiste for more information and reviews! www.whitneypaterson.com I have been a student and teacher of yoga for the last 10 years. I have studied many different styles, however, the traditions that have called to her most have been Ashtanga and Iyengar. I'm drawn to the extensive lineages that both of these traditions maintain, and also their emphasis on the teacher-student relationship. It has been my experience that having a one-on-one relationship to a teacher is essential for progress in yoga. This is what led me to focus my energy and efforts to working with one-on-one with students. I find that students are able to w ... View Profile

How much do yoga classes cost?

Read more about local pricing and what to expect in our cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much do yoga classes cost?

The average cost of single group sessions at yoga studios across the country is $15 to $20. For private yoga training, you will likely spend between $30 and $70 on each lesson. Yoga classes mostly take place in a group setting, and the price per class depends on the location, yoga teacher’s knowledge and experience, and years of teaching.

How long is a yoga class?

On average, a yoga class is 75 to 90 minutes long. Many instructors say 90 minutes is simply how long it takes to pace through all the sacred yoga asanas, but a new shorter 60 minute class is quickly becoming popular with students.

What to wear to yoga class?

Most women prefer to wear tank tops or a sports bra that's made of a cotton and lycra (spandex) blend when they do yoga. Loose tee shirts and underwire bras are usually a no-no because they have a tendency to get in the way of movement.

For the bottoms, most women prefer to wear tights. These comfortable and stretchable pants will provide you with a full range of movement and allow your instructor to check your alignment. For slower-paced classes, you may be able to pull off wearing long skirts or stretchable harlem pants.

What to bring to yoga class?

Although many necessities are usually provided for you, there are a few things you may still want to bring yourself.

Here's what to bring to yoga class:

  1. Comfortable yoga attire
  2. Water bottle
  3. Hand towel
  4. Yoga mat
  5. Change of clothes
  6. Post-yoga snack

How often should you do yoga?

For those who are already quite active, doing yoga at least once or twice per week is recommended. For experienced practitioners, doing yoga every day is not uncommon. However, if you begin to be sore, consider taking a day or two off. Even if you only do you for one hour a week, you will experience the benefits of the practice.

How long does it take to get good at yoga?

There are many beginner yoga poses and sequences that you can get good at in your first yoga class. On a more spiritual level, it may take a lifetime to find the union between mind, body and spirit. You should expect to practice regularly for about six months before you feel confident that you can perform fundamental poses steadily and with some degree of proper form.
