About

At the Family Self Defense School we understand and appreciate that our students have different abilities, needs and limitations, as such, we work with our students to help them not only succeed but to feel accomplished as well. We know that their levels of success may differ, however, we push them to be and do their very best. Our service stands out on its own, needless to say, we work with you, as we want you to feel that we care (because we do!) The F.S.D.S. is a school built up for the different individual, for those who have trauma in their past, bullying or fitness requirements, and so much more.

We recieve satisfaction when we see people's eyes shine when they learn something new; Or, how they feel empowered and talk to us about how they have accomplished some feat that had been out of reach either physically or emotionally before. Be it, as it may, that they learn to stand up for themselves or others.

We help our student's achieve their goals through positive influence and attainable steps. In our experience giving individual customers things to work towards (i.e. belts and ranks) they tend to do better than if they only work until they feel like they are better. We give praise, but not injustly. Our instructor has been studying for over fourty years and is currently a tenth (10th) Dan (or degree/ level of black belt). This means that our instructor has studied most of his life and attained recognition in different martial arts before recieving permission to not only create his own art, but to open his own school.

    Frequently asked questions

Typically we invite the students to come to a series of free classes, have them sign a waiver, and then after each of those free classes ask the individual how they liked those classes. After the free classes have taken place we invite the potential student/ customer to join us and become apart of our client/ customer base. At the end of the three free classes we do offer once more for the potential client to join us, and offer to waive the sign up fee if they do sign up by the fourth class (which would no longer be free).

Our office manager/ owner has an associate's degree in Business Entrepreneurship, as well as general studies/ educations.

Our sensei - grand master Hawley - is a volunteer teacher. He has an associates in general sciences, and a batchelor's degree in Social Work. Furthermore, Sensei Hawley served in the United States Navy for nearly six years before he was honorably and medically discharged. He has been a foster-adopt father for nearly thirty years, has published his own curriculum as a book and is working on a second book as well.

We started teaching because we wanted to share and expand our knowledge while helping our communities.

All Types! Our youngest student is five years old, and our eldest was eighty-six. We continue to work with people of all ethnicities, genders, nationalities and most affiliations. We work with convicted and reformed convicts, as well as people with various disabilities / are differently abled.

We are fond of attending seminars with other Martial Art's schools, and styles. We also enjoy hosting said seminars.

We enjoy having testing take place, from the lowest of ranks to the highest.

But our favorite is definately our new students coming in  and joining our "Family".

The advice we would give would be to get a couple of free classes - we offer three - to make sure that it and you are a good fit. Then, make sure that the teacher/ instructor allows questions during, before and after classes; and that it fits your idea of why martial art's are studied.

    1) Why am i taking martial art's?

    2) Am i interested in ranking or just knowledge?

    3) How long will it take me to achieve proficiency or rank or both?

    4) How does the school/ dojo work with my abilities or disabilities?

    5) Does training include one on one with a partner?

    6) Is sparring mandatory?

    7) Are private lessons reasonable?

    8) What credentials do the instructors have?

    9) What problems does learning martial art's solve for you?

    10) Anything else you can think of!
