How did you get started teaching?
Laura is a third generation Southern California and grew up in Arcadia. Laura's first job, at age 17, was as a physical therapy assistant at a sports rehab center in Arcadia. She worked with all levels of rehabilitation from athletes to stroke patients. She was offered this job and was blessed to train extensively with this leading sports physical therapist after completing a lengthy physical therapy program for her knee following a severe skiing accident. It was this early experience, both as the client and later as the therapist, that helped to shape her career choice to date.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students who are returning to exercise, students new to exercise (or at least the modalities that I offer), students looking to improve sports performance, students recovering from illness or injury, students who have back or neck pain, students who have found hope no where else, and students who simply love Pilates/Gyrotonic/Barre/Chi Kung.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I really love solving "issues in the tissues." Recently a client came in that is a scuba diver. He mentioned he'd been working at a computer and noticed pain across his shoulders and neck. We then found that he was unable to reach the valves on his scuba tanks (a very serious problem). So we did a single session to regain his flexibility and relieve the pain and tightness he was experiencing. By the end of our session he proudly exclaimed, "now I can turn my valves!"
Another client was in the studio complaining of knee pain. We found (thru a series of muscle action tests) that her glutes weren't firing properly. I taught her "the glute fix" and gave her exercises to do at home. Before she left the studio, we made sure she knew exactly which muscles she was to be feeling the work in, which were stabilizing, and which were to be off. She came in for her next session (a week later) and reported that her knee pain (and mid back pain) was down by 50%. Within the following week, her pain was completely gone.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Quality is far more important than quantity. Many people head to loud gyms or crowded group classes and wonder why they don't get the results they desire. Mind-Body Fitness programs are truly designed to be taught one-on-one so that each students receives personal mentoring from their instructor. Also, the quality of instruction one receives in Personal Training private sessions is well worth "the price of admission" as results and sessions are custom tailored to individual needs.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What goals do I want to achieve and how much time and energy am I willing to devote to a program?
