I started with Kona Pilates about 15 years ago at about the age of 50. At that point I had absolutely no background with any form of fitness training and, besides keeping fit, my priority was finding a studio where I felt assured I would not actually sustain injuries from the workouts. I had always been fit because of extreme gardening (its a jungle in Hawaii) and building rock walls and creating hardscapes in may spare time away from office work. I recognized that flexibilty, mobility and development over overall strength (I learned that it is called core strength) is required to age well. I am 66 years old now and feel very fit and self confident in the aging process. I was able to stop taking prescription medication to regain bone density, which I attribute in great part to Pilates, Gyrokinesis, and Gyrotonic classes with Laura. I have always considered the cost of the classes as a necessity and an investment in my overall health. Laura knows the human body, how it moves, how to work through injuries, how to encourage and have fun with workouts, and is, quite frankly, intuitive as to each individuals needs. I am still in Kona and take two cyber classes a week. These classes are what I do for my well being and, therefore, my happiness.

Having Laura as my first time pilates instructor was the best possible way for me to enter the world of core on. Her instruction was clear and precise so that I understood exactly what I had to do and just as important - why. Laura is passionate and extremely knowledgeable about her craft, and L.A. is fortunate to have her expertise as a top-notch Pilates and Gyrotonic instructor!!

So, a bit of background: I am an avid scuba diver, and spend a fair amount of my time practicing the technical end of that sport (chiefly deep diving), meaning that I carry lots of heavy gear, often on uneven footing (shore diving here on the Big Island of Hawaii) or on an unstable boat deck. A strong core is essential to being able to do this.
Efficiently carrying and moving this gear under water also makes some unusual demands on the body, in particular the core, glutes, shoulders and low back. A great many technical divers suffer from low back pain from struggling against the gear while in the water. Pilates and Gryrotonic have given me the tools I need to address this.
When I first started Pilates 11 years ago I was unable to bend to touch my toes, had trouble reaching my valves on a set of doubles and lacked any real semblance of core strength. Laura has been able to tailor a fitness regimen for me that addresses the particular needs placed on me by my sport and recognizing and helping me work through any physical limitations. Without a doubt I could not do what I am able do now without her help.

I was a long-time student of Lauras here in Kona. With her broad cross-technique experience coupled with her acute biomechanics knowledge, she has the skill set to directly address a students needs. Depending on how my body was doing a given day, wed do some Gyro to loosen up the stiff computer-desk joints, then Pilates for strengthening the core, then stretches from Pilates and Yoga to prepare for my next day at work. Or, if feeling strong go right into Pilates but finish with some Gyro to keep things limber.
Konas loss is Californias gain. Ask Laura about Hawaiian Mixed-Plate. She can cook you up a personal exercise regiment for your specific needs using all of the ingredients at her disposal.

Laura is a third generation Southern California and grew up in Arcadia. Laura's first job, at age 17, was as a physical therapy assistant at a sports rehab center in Arcadia. She worked with all levels of rehabilitation from athletes to stroke patients. She was offered this job and was blessed to train extensively with this leading sports physical therapist after completing a lengthy physical therapy program for her knee following a severe skiing accident. It was this early experience, both as the client and later as the therapist, that helped to shape her career choice to date.

I have worked with students who are returning to exercise, students new to exercise (or at least the modalities that I offer), students looking to improve sports performance, students recovering from illness or injury, students who have back or neck pain, students who have found hope no where else, and students who simply love Pilates/Gyrotonic/Barre/Chi Kung.

I really love solving "issues in the tissues." Recently a client came in that is a scuba diver. He mentioned he'd been working at a computer and noticed pain across his shoulders and neck. We then found that he was unable to reach the valves on his scuba tanks (a very serious problem). So we did a single session to regain his flexibility and relieve the pain and tightness he was experiencing. By the end of our session he proudly exclaimed, "now I can turn my valves!"

Another client was in the studio complaining of knee pain. We found (thru a series of muscle action tests) that her glutes weren't firing properly. I taught her "the glute fix" and gave her exercises to do at home. Before she left the studio, we made sure she knew exactly which muscles she was to be feeling the work in, which were stabilizing, and which were to be off. She came in for her next session (a week later) and reported that her knee pain (and mid back pain) was down by 50%. Within the following week, her pain was completely gone.

Quality is far more important than quantity. Many people head to loud gyms or crowded group classes and wonder why they don't get the results they desire. Mind-Body Fitness programs are truly designed to be taught one-on-one so that each students receives personal mentoring from their instructor. Also, the quality of instruction one receives in Personal Training private sessions is well worth "the price of admission" as results and sessions are custom tailored to individual needs.

What goals do I want to achieve and how much time and energy am I willing to devote to a program?
