Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We meet and discuss what the student is looking for, and then we set out their initial goals and plan on how to reach them. Then, the sweat begins.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
American Freestyle Wrestling in school, Aikijujitsu/ Hapkido training 1 year in South Korea, U.S. military combatives training-Bradley Steiner's Combato System, Escrima and basic weapons training, Black Belt in Chun Do Kwan, and I have trained and competed with many folks and have done Full-contact training WTF style TKD, PKA style American Kickboxing, and some early MMA competition back in the 90s.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
No, I tailor costs to each student and their situation and curriculum
How did you get started teaching?
I stared teaching professionally in 1988/89 as a full time TKD instructor for the American Martial Arts Association under Young Sang Kang--I taught til I left the association in 1992. The group had 75 schools and clubs in the tri-state area at the time, but closed in 1993 due to financial issues. I've studied and taught, mostly in FMAs and TKD/Stand up styles ever since. I normally teach a modern style working from standing/striking and clinch to ground style emphasizing modern self defense for ordinary people-- I want regular students to have solid, simple techniques to use in those few moments in real life that you actually need them. Situational Awareness and handling conflicts and escalating violence are my approach. I do use some traditional elements in trading but am not a forms based karate style teacher.
