Jim Smith Karate, Goju-Te
About
Jim Smith Karate has been in business since 1973, under the direction of Hanshi Jim Smith, who has been bringing Westchester and Putnam County the very best in martial arts instruction in the style of Goju-Te Karate. Although our techniques are based on century-old knowledge, it is our application of that knowledge that sets Jim Smith Karate apart. Our instructional methods allow students to develop a strong foundation in basic skills, and gives them the opportunity to strengthen their natural physical abilities in order to maximize their self-defense skills.
Classes are taught by certified black belt instructors and we boast a 5:1 student/teacher ratio. At Jim Smith Karate you will NEVER pay a belt fee or test fee, plus at Jim Smith Karate you will NEVER be "locked-in" to a contract.

How did you get started teaching?
I started as a student of Judo at age 5 and studied many different styles before finally settling on Goju 40 years ago. I had an opportunity to take over a school that was closing and decided to do so.
Goju-Te is a style I founded.
What types of students have you worked with?
All students of all abilities are welcome here. Everybody is a starter, nobody sits on the bench.
The beauty of Goju-Te is that it is designed for all to be able to participate and meet their goals.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
We have done many fundraisers but one that stands out and was special to us was a tournament we held in which all money went to a local non-for-profit: Community Cares. Our entire community was involved including boy scouts and girl scouts.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Observe the students before you hire the teacher. The instructor is supposed to be good but how do they prepare the students? Some can do and some can teach and some can do and teach.
Do the students meet your expectations?
Is the instructor personable and approachable? The instructor should be catering to the students. The students should not be catering to the instructor.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The students should know what their goals are ahead of time. They must also know how much of a commitment they are willing to give.
Questions to ask: Do you charge belt fees and test fees? Do I have to pay to promote? Aside from my tuition, what other fees will I incur? How many instructors are available during my class? Do you have a trial program?
