The Jasmine Dragon
About
Kenpo Self-Defense Classes begin with a gentle vinyasa yoga asana warm up, then instruction of karate fundamentals (traditional stances, blocks, and strikes), combined with kungfu tactics (groin strikes and flowing motions), and jiujitsu elements (arm-locks and pinning techniques) within a variety of unique self-defense scenarios. Knowledge of Kenpo Escape Techniques are strongly emphasized as the measure of progress, and while balance and flexibility training are consistently incorporated, there is no requirement for a practitioner to have advanced physical abilities.
Yoga Infused Kenpo Self-Defense is an empowering martial art that encourages every student to progress at their own individual pace. This art focuses primarily on application for each person's unique set of abilities and is not in any way competition oriented. All ages and abilities are encouraged to participate, and this art has been especially effective for those of more vulnerable body types such as children, elderly, sedentary, and chronically injured peoples. Many students have been able to practice Kenpo alongside physical therapy as the physical activity required is not particularly jarring or strenuous but emphasizes restorative poses and circulation

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to meet with students in person and discuss what they're specifically interested in acheiving and why. It is very important for me to be aware of any injuries or physical limitations. Whether its Yoga or Kenpo Self-Defense, there are always modifications that will fit your body and goals. I do not have a cookie-cutter, one size fits all curriculum, but rather classes are often developed around the students' specfic interests and abilities.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching Kenpo Self-Defense since 2010 in Idaho and in Washington since 2014. I began my training in 2008 with a Women’s Self Defense Class that was offered through The College of Idaho, and continued instruction with 5th Degree Black Belt Mike Winchester after completing both the basic and advanced self defense programs. I graduated from The College of Idaho in 2012 with a Bachelor's Degree in History and a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, and by that time I had been teaching students and coaching sparring classes for Master Winchester at his Dojo in Caldwell Idaho for a couple years. I completed my Black Belt Test and was promoted to Sensei in 2013. In 2017 I completed a rigorous 200 Hour Teacher Training Program of Vinyasa Yoga at Rising Lotus Yoga in Sherman Oaks, California.
I have been working with children in various forms of educational programs since 2005. From 2005 to 2007 I was an Volunteer Education Assistant for a homeschool oriented program called "Hands On Science" which provided materials and instruction for group science projects. In 2008 and 2009 I completed a full year Education Assistant Internship with Butte View Elementary School in Emmett, Idaho. This internship involved assisting in a third grade classroom for three hours a day, five days a week, working with both large and small groups, over achieving and challenged students. I have worked with special needs students for many years, specializing in attention deficit, hyperactivity, and asperger diagnosed students.
