Elena W. says, "I was fortunate enough to meet Matt through the MMA gym I was training at, and I seriously cannot say enough good things about him and our training. As a girl, I have definitely sometimes felt self-conscious and awkward working out in front of other people, especially guys. But Matt is so kind and so professional that I felt incredibly comfortable around him from day one, and that comfort level allowed me to concentrate on whatever exercise or technique we were working on 100 percent. He is very supportive, so that even when he was pushing me to work harder and nudge me out of my comfort zone, I never felt like what he was asking was impossible or that I was stuck going it alone. Also he is a great listener, and will cater workouts to what you say you want to work on. OR in my case, I didn't know what I wanted to work on. I just told him, "I want to get better at kick boxing!!" and he came up with all kinds of great drills that focused on weaknesses in MY technique, based on what he saw at the gym. Matt is fantastic at breaking down really complicated kick boxing techniques and teaching them thoroughly and effectively, and he's just as great at doing that with different exercises for fitness (my sessions were technique-heavy because that's what I wanted, but I understand he works on just fitness stuff with other clients). We would spend about ten or fifteen minutes of each session on conditioning, and he taught me some great exercises that I still do, and that I've never seen anyone else do. Like you literally can't learn them from anyone else. Also Matt is an MMA fighter himself, and so he knows all about how to get and stay in absolutely ridiculous shape. I was super lucky to get to work with Matt, and miss him dearly. But the things he taught me continue to stick with me and make a difference in the way I kick box, and really in the amount of confidence I have, at my new MMA gym and out in the world at large. I can't imagine a better trainer!" Read more

Rob S. says, "I came to Dagan to get better at Baseball and Football. I went from 170 to 195, literally doubled my strength and quickness, and went from backup to a STARTER on both teams. Dagan cares. He wants you to reach your potential, even more than you do sometimes! He truly truly cares about you as a person and believes in you. I can't say enough. The lessons I learned go far beyond just training in a gym or in sports. He taught me about confidence, mental strength, breaking comfort zones and these will all translated to making me a stronger person INSIDE, for the rest of my life. I can't say enough." Read more

Your Personal Training questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

A personal trainer costs $40 to $70 per hour on average or $250 to $400 per month for two sessions per week. Prices depend on the session length, location, trainer's experience, and if you buy a monthly package or book individual sessions.

Personal training rates at popular gyms are $50 to $110 per session, with most sessions lasting one hour. Many gyms offer a free initial fitness assessment with a certified personal trainer.

Is hiring a personal trainer worth it?

Hiring a personal trainer can be worth it if you need accountability, are having difficulty achieving your fitness goals on your own, or are returning to a fitness routine after an injury. A personal trainer can help you set realistic expectations, design a custom fitness plan, measure your progress, and boost your motivation.

A personal trainer can suggest activities that work best for your body and your schedule to maximize your results with the time and equipment available to you. Trainers also provide critical guidance for proper exercise form and movement, reducing your risk of injury.

Can you pay for a personal trainer with insurance or an HSA?

Health insurance typically does not cover the cost of a personal trainer, and you can only pay for a personal trainer with your Health Savings Account (HSA) if your physician or nurse practitioner prescribes an exercise regimen.

Your doctor must write a letter of medical necessity (LMN) confirming the personal training sessions are intended to treat or prevent a medical condition, and you must provide a copy to the IRS when filing your taxes.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

You should meet with your personal trainer 1 to 3 times per week, depending on your current fitness level and experience, short-term and long-term goals, and how often you're able to train solo during the week. Most trainers recommend beginning with 2 to 3 sessions per week for at least six weeks to establish a routine.

  • If you're on a budget and can only meet with your personal trainer once per week, you'll need to train on your own at least one to three times per week to make progress toward your fitness goals.
  • Consider seeing your personal trainer up to 4 times per week to work on short-term goals, like dropping a dress size before a wedding or training for a sports competition.

What does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer starts by evaluating your current fitness level, strengths and weaknesses, and skills, then develops a customized exercise plan to help you meet your goals. The trainer works one-on-one with you to monitor your progress and provide guidance and encouragement.

A trainer will ensure you're working each muscle group correctly and at the right frequency, and that you're using proper form for each exercise to avoid injury.

How do I find the best personal trainer near me?

For the best results, aim to build a long-term relationship with your personal trainer to help you get in shape, stay in shape, and achieve your fitness goals. Follow these tips to find the best personal trainer for you:

  • Look for an NCSA Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) or Certified Performance and Sports Scientist (CPSS).
  • If you have specific goals, such as bodybuilding or running a marathon, select a trainer with experience in that area.
  • Read their reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Meet with the trainer to discuss your goals, workout preferences, and any health conditions.
  • Ask them how the exercises will change and progress over time. Be wary of trainers who offer only vague answers, as this may indicate a lack of experience.
  • Confirm the personal trainer has liability insurance and training in CPR and first aid.

What questions should I ask personal trainers before hiring?

Ask these questions to ensure you choose a personal trainer with the right experience and skills:

  • How long have you been a personal trainer?
  • Which certifications do you have?
  • What is your fitness specialty?
  • What is your teaching style?
  • How do you assess a new client?
  • What experience do you have working with clients at my fitness level?
  • Do you have any client photos or video testimonials?
  • What does your program include?
  • What results should I expect to see?
  • How long will it take to reach my fitness goals?
  • How do you track fitness goals and progress?
  • How will the exercises change over time?
  • Do you have liability insurance?
  • Are you trained in CPR and first aid?

I came to Dagan because I was a couple weeks shy of my friends destination wedding and couldn't fit into my already purchased bridesmaids dress . Dagan's level of commitment to health and fitness is obvious, he knows his stuff. With his diet tips and cardio training I was able to walk down the isle without my bridesmaids dress zipper 1" unzipped. Dagan has an encouraging and non intimidating approach and I would recommend him to anyone trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle.

This course was a game changer for me! 1 in 3 American women experience domestic violence, in their lifetimes. This is a shocking statistic! As a survivor of domestic abuse, I had gone to therapy to address the emotional scars, but it had never occurred to me to take a self-defense course and learn how to fight back. Elliott encouraged me to give it a try, and I'm so glad I did! It was empowering to discover that I am equipped to defend myself, effectively, in the face of an attack, without any special equipment, at my current weight and fitness level! The course required 4 hours of time and a modest fee. The results were priceless! Every woman in American needs this information!

Coach Deep did a great job of working with my 9 year old on QB skills as well as general fitness training and good athlete discipline and habits. His correction to my son’s deep pass throwing mechanics definitely made a noticeable difference this season for our team resulting in more touchdowns and less interceptions. He has and teaches a great work ethic that goes beyond just the sport.
