My name is Alec Rains and I am the owner/operator of The Mat Martial Arts in Cedar Par/Northwest Austin. We offer age-appropriate self defense to kids and adults of all ages. Our unique approach to teaching awareness, playground safety and Krav Maga tactics blended with additional martial arts is what makes us so appealing to anyone seeking training in what is MOST EFFECTIVE to them and their given situation, rather than claim one specific system is a catch-all for holistic training.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Everyone is always welcome to try a free class. We like to spend a small amount of time in an brief introduction so you don't walk into class blindly, but we have many classes on our schedule designed for less experienced students to train in foundational skills rather than make everyone train together without care for their experience level. Outside of the free trial, we also offer extended trials for two weeks where you can get a good sense of your daily routine as it relates to the potential of adding us to that routine.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Owner has 30 years training in traditional and modern martial arts and self defense. Additional instructors have varying experiences ranging from military law enforcement and civilian instruction for 12 years, all the way to civilian Krav Maga training and instruction for 5 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Many training options to choose from based on desired flexibility and availability of the student. Memberships range from low cost monthly due to punch card to prvivate lessons by appointment. Standard memberships begin as low as $89-$125/mo.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Be discerning and thorough and follow your instincts. Just because someone boast high volumes of experience it does not mean they are the right instructor for YOU. Make sure whoever you choose to learn from/train with respects you the same amount you are expected to respect them.
