Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I begin with a free assessment to learn the clients motivation and goals, upper body and lower body strength, core strength, and cardiovascular capabilities. I also have the client score certain exercises so I can learn what type of work out the client is most likely to enjoy. Then I put together a comprehensive program using my background in exercise science that us very unique, effective, SAFE, and enjoyable! I use personal bests to mark improvement rather than just the scale.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis on exercise, wellness, and nutrition. I am a certified fitness nutrition specialist. I've also been a kickboxing instructor for several years.

How did you get started teaching?
I had a high paying, high stress, dissatisfying job that I lost to the poor economy in January 2009. I needed to do what I loved, what I was passionate about. I knew it would be fitness. I started out as a class instructor at a boxing gym and began training clients 1 on 1 with the guidance of former professional boxer, Paul Rubio. I fell in love with educating people in how to live longer and better. I fell in love with helping people fall in love with themselves.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students. Some clients are moms who wish to get back into their pre-pregnancy clothes, even after years. I've helped people who start out 400+ pounds get under 350 and go on to lose on their own. Some clients work in the tech industry with sedentary jobs and understand the need for and benefits of exercise. I've helped busy CEOs and busy stay at home parents! I've also helped people who are looking for reduced aches and pains and more energy and new parents trying to get their routine back.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I helped a client go from a size 12 to a size 4 in 6 months. I helped a client who began at 420 pounds get down to 340 and he continues now to lose weight on his own.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Only hire a personal trainer who has both a certification (NASM, ACE, ACSM) AND a 4 year degree. A personal trainer must understand how to read a scientific study and interpret it's results to stay current. They must also understand physics, biomechanics, and physiology in order to design workouts that keep the client safe! Did you know crunches can cause a herniated disc? Did you know that clients with high blood pressure should not do isometric (holding like a plank) exercises? Education is key!!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Most people have goals in mind, but why? Why those fitness goals? What would it mean to you to if you could meet those goals? Why is that important to you? What do you believe your hurdles are in meeting those goals currently?
