Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start with a comprehensive assesment which includes movement screening, length/tension relationships, and posture.
A review of nutritional and lifestyle behaviors is just as important.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I know education is the key to sucess in any field, and I've studied for hundreds of hours, and continue to study to increase my knowledge of anatomy, physiology and human beings in general. To me, Personal Training is a lot more than teaching people to exercise. At the core of that is a person with feelings, challenges and issues that affect our day to day performance.
One of my philosophies is to "train, not drain". The workout on any given day will depend on how much that person has to give that day.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My rate for Personal Training is $70.00 per session, and they last betwen 45 minutes to an hour depending on the goals for that day's session.
How did you get started teaching?
I've always had a passion for fitness, and had a home gym. Before I became a Trainer, friends and colleagues would often ask me what I did to stay in shape. I'd invite them to work out with me, and offered what I knew at the time. It was very rewarding to watch them learn and begin to improve.
I spent 24 years in the commercial printing industry, and as a manager I enjoyed teaching and training emplyees who needed it.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with a vast cross - section of people from all walks of life. One of my focuses has been on correcting orthopedic issues, so many of my customers come from referrals.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Most recently, a man who suffered an injury falling from a horse was left with shoulder pain and dysfuncion. In addition, his diet was poor and he lacked energy.
On his first seesion, I was able to completely restore range of motion and function to his shoulder. Since then, he's become very strong and fit. He followed my dietary program, and his health and energy levels are fantastic. He continues to train with me, and make improvements.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure they're certified, and they understand the need for what we call functional training.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Clearly identify your goals, and be honest with your candidate.
