What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We go through foundational basics from Day 1 with our students and review them often such as proper falling techniques, breaking balance, conditioning, escapes, etc. This way you have an understanding as to why we do what we do later on as we layer on top of the foundation with increasingly more advanced movements and thought processes.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Sensei Tony began practicing traditional, Japanese Ju-Jitsu at the age of 8 under Master Michael J. Smilley. By the time he left for college he earned a black belt (3rd dan). Sensei Tony moved to Ames, to attend Iowa State University and study martial arts under the world renowned, Grandmaster Yong Chin Pak. He earned his first degree black belt in Hapkido in 1990. He also holds various belt rankings in Judo,Tae Kwon Do, Kendo, Karate, Sin Jitsu, MMA, and a variety of small weapons training.
