About this pro

You're considering a personal trainer to help improve your level of fitness. Great! Now be sure you get the most for your money. One who can actually make changes, not just promises. Every trainer sounds good when describing themselves. But only a few I consider professionals; someone to whom I would refer a friend or relative. The rest are nice people but not particularly capable of instructing others. Most are former school athletes or exercise enthusiasts, but that's not enough qualification to instruct others. And too many will waste your time, while giving you misinformation or worse, putting you at risk of injury with exercises not appropriate for your experience or fitness level. Every day I see trainers putting people at unnecessary risk of injury. Whether you just want to get toned, lose weight, build muscle or are a performance athlete looking to further your ability I have the intelligence, experience, education and overall expertise to create a custom plan exclusively for your unique needs. One that will evolve as you do. We'll meet at your home, office, apartment or condo or wherever is convenient for you. Every trainer claims this. But few have the intellect, attention to detail and communication skills absolutely necessary to make it happen. I'm not talking about getting you to work up a sweat. Anybody can do that (and most classes and training programs don't do much more). I'm talking about real, substantial, for-the-rest-of-your-life change. Talk to me, you'll get the idea. Better yet, commit to my program. It's like nothing else in town. My program is not for everyone. But if you're serious, you want the best. Call me now. One other thing. I'n not one of these trainers running what I call an employment agency. I won't be referring you out to a dozen or so inexperienced trainers I employ. When you get a quote from me, it's to work with me...

Passing my knowledge along. Enabling people who for years have been unsuccessfully trying to get in shape, either on their own- or worse- with an ineffective trainer. You probably know someone who has worked with a trainer alone or in a group and not seen results.

It's very rewarding when people realize they're becoming more capable and athletic. That they're improving their longevity, self esteem and energy. And we've done it together, safely, and specifically to their unique needs and prior experience.

I am a former triathlete coming back from a back injury. Shawn has proven to be instrumental in my recovery by helping me increase my strength dramatically and improving my mobility and running mechanics. As a plus I've gained nice defined muscle mass. He takes his clients needs seriously, always looking out for good form and proven results.

I originally hired Trainer Shawn for a 14 week workout period. Shawn's methods and detailed explanations are always on point. It's a healthy combination of intensity with smart training. I'm a 33 year old male. I work and I enjoy an active lifestyle. During our initial consultation we discussed my existing routines, (exercise, diet, typical posture at work, etc.) then we customized a specific program that fit my schedule. He brought with him the essential tools we needed including a heart rate monitor. We were able to do analytics and see all improvements both on physically and on paper. Shawn inspired me to want to learn the exercises and do them between our scheduled sessions. I found it was important to not only be properly warmed up for the training but also became very grateful for all the suggestions for healthy habits to practice on. All in all, every session was better than the previous thanks to the constant encouragement. I culminated my 14 week session at a triathlon race earning a personal record. It was awesome. Shawn is awesome. I'm glad I continue to have an ongoing business relationship with Trainer Shawn and recommend him to anyone who's looking to shape up.

I have been training with Shawn for a year and a half. I have experience with many trainers and Shawn stands out as the most knowledgeable and unique trainer I've worked with. Every workout is thoughtfully customized for me which has given me great results. I no longer experience back pain and I'm stronger than I've ever been at age 47. Shawn insists on good form, pays attention and coaches me instead of simply counting out reps (which I often see other trainers doing) because he truly cares about my overall fitness and avoiding injury. Shawn is highly knowledgeable of the body's muscular system and has taught and re-conditioned me to move differently, not only in my workouts but in my everyday life. I can't recommend Shawn enough!

I met Shawn at my gym. He was training someone, so it worked out well for me because it gave me a chance to observe him before even speaking with him. I hadn’t thought of it beforehand but it was the perfect demonstration. I was able to compare him to the other trainers and I can easily see how much better Shawn is. The best way I can describe it is, Shawn is focused. You can easily tell how he’s paying attention and guiding, not just watching like other trainers. You never see him just standing there. I’ve seen other trainers with their clients and even I can tell people are not getting much from them. It's so obvious after working with a true professional who is excellent at what he does. Shawn's great. He's not a typical trainer. In great shape, yes. Full of energy, yes. Obsessed with working out, no. He can relate to the pressures and obligations we all have, professionally and personally, which make it hard to maintain an exercise program. What I love is he explains what to do and why to do it. For the first time I understand why I'm doing planks, or lifting weights or whatever and the proper position to be in. I now get more out of my workouts so I’m making better use of the time I manage to find to exercise. And he makes it simple to understand. Shawn made me feel comfortable right away. And for the first time I am learning how to exercise correctly.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

We first review your goals, previous exercise or training experiences, concerns, injuries, etc. You tell me your priorities. I listen, then I respond. I provide expert opinion, and we together begin a custom plan exclusively for you. One that adapts and progresses as you do, to achieve your goals. If I feel you have misconceptions or unfounded expectations which may create obstacles, I explain. I educate you, to get you on the right path. Many people try to improve their physical condition, overcome life challenges, recover from illness or injury, etc. And relatively few are successful. This is because they do not know how to overcome the obstacles, how to stay focused, stay on track and consistent, and what works and what doesn't. And all too often they follow the ineffective advice that gets passed along in commercial gyms and fitness franchises, in online articles from unqualified sources, from unskilled trainers and even friends and relatives. Call and I'll provide specific examples and comparisons.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Training is a teaching position, and my communication skills are excellent. Most trainers do not possess this ability or recognize it as a fundamental requirement. The majority of trainers I know are exercise fanatics themselves - in great physical condition- but this in no way means they know how to train anyone else. I am a teacher, a coach, a guide. I have studied anatomy and physiology at the university level. I have numerous certifications, and years of experience. So do many other trainers. The difference is I know how to explain, educate and guide my clients to see results. Call and I'll provide comparison to help you qualify different trainers.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I keep track of typical costs for personal training from trainers and commercial gyms and I always strive to be competitively priced. I offer different promotions and pricing structures to try to make working with me appealing to the varying types of people seeking a trainer through Thumbtack. My rates can vary a bit based on program frequency, how our sessions fit into my schedule of other clients, whether we meet at my busiest times or can help even out my day, etc. Call and we can work out the best value for you.

How did you get started teaching?

I began in response to the lack of competent trainers I witnessed firsthand in gyms, health club chains and fitness franchises all over town. Trainers not attentive, marginally skilled, not providing guidance, sitting idly by, looking at their phones, talking with other people instead of coaching their clients. When I would ask a trainer for advice, I too often was given vague, hasty or inaccurate information. And on many occasions have been given instruction that was inappropriate for my need or physical condition, or was an advanced or risky maneuver which could cause injury. I finally decided it was time to revolutionize the personal trainer profession. Call and I'll help you avoid the pitfalls of the typical personal training experience.

What types of students have you worked with?

All types. Both men and women of course. And a surprisingly broad age range. My youngest client is twelve and my oldest 86. I've trained competitive athletes, executives and stay at home moms (and dads). People trying to lose weight. People trying to offset the effects of office work. Active people wanting to improve their physical (and mental) performance. And people just wanting to live life more fully and healthfully. Call and I'll provide instances in which I've trained others like you.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I can't single out any of my clients as being more impressive or highly regarded than the rest. I'm proud that I built my business from scratch, and have never been part of the commercial fitness industry, which is just like any other big business- focused principally on profit and not on helping people. Big gyms, commercial health clubs, spas and franchise fitness operations sell people ineffective programs, empty promises instead of great advice and instruction. Sad but true. Call and I'll provide specific examples.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Don't shop price alone. Cheapest does not mean a better deal. And in many cases you get what you pay for. A highly skilled trainer earns their higher fees...unless they're a staff trainer at a big commercial gym in which case the corporation is the one keeping most of the money- some of the worst trainers are at the big gyms and franchises. In contrast, an independent trainer is someone who has built up their business through hard work and high capability. And it costs money to run a small business so you can't just be the bargain basement trainer. Call and I'll let you know how best to compare and qualify trainers. Also, talk to them. Just about every trainer sounds great on paper. Many have exercise related degrees, various certifications and years of "experience". But just because a trainer has been "training" for say, 10 years, doesn't mean they were good when they started or are any better today. I know countless trainers who are putting their clients at risk every day or otherwise not providing any value. And have been doing so for years... Finally, a caution about nutrition counseling. Many trainers promote nutrition counseling or even diet planning as part of their services. If a trainer you're considering working with is promoting this as part of their paid service, avoid them. This is one of the easiest ways to disqualify an incompetent trainer. Not only is a specific license and/or registration as a nutritionist/dietitian (LNC, LDN or RD) required by the Department of Health for this- with much education and testing to acquire- it is also against Florida state law to sell nutrition or dietary advice without the required license/registration.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Look for a trainer who truly impresses you, not just seems acceptable, convenient, available- or inexpensive. There are way too many mediocre trainers who will waste your time and money. Take the time to talk with a number of trainers, and look for one with in -depth understanding and knowledge, not just an energetic, positive attitude. I've met many people who hired a trainer based on their enthusiasm. But in the end the trainer is little more than a cheerleader. And you want a coach. A teacher. A mentor. An expert. Call and I'll work hard to impress you.
