How did you get started teaching?
I became interested in teaching as a new Black Belt and taught at Flagler College in St Augustine, FL on a work grant from the college, while I attended Flagler College. From there I branched off into my own martial arts school and have taught in St Augustine as well as Jacksonville.
What types of students have you worked with?
I train martial arts students who have an interest in developing confidence and ability to defend themselves which is a necessity in today's environment. From tiny tigers to grandparents and every age in between... many students come to our school because of a personal commitment to excellence and our instructors are first rate people, with a love for teaching others the talents we have been given through our masters in our organizations...
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
At Warrior Kali Training, we understand there are real life threats, so as instructors we attend events like Kali Combat Knife with Master Apolo Ladra who teaches us to be teachers and not only practitioners... there is a big difference. We must also pass a fitness and knowledge test. Intense training...but we know that to be the best at what we do requires intensity since 'iron sharpens iron'.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Choose your martial arts school and attend as many classes as possible. Develop a training schedule and stick to it. Do not miss even when you do not feel like you have the enery for it. We all have busy schedules and lifestyles but the main thing is to attend as many classes as possible. Personal discipline is needed. Stay on track... And have an instructor who cares enough to talk to you on a regular basis about your training. Ask for help, that is why we are here. One more thing. Motivate each other in class and maintain a great attitude.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Maybe Health, Appearance, Performance and Self-Defense.
What do you want to accomplish in a martial arts program?
Do you have your Family's support in this training?
How can it enhance or help in other activites?
Do you have the time to devote to your training schedule?
