How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching group classes and training clients right when I finished my Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education in 1985. Besides working as a teacher I also wanted to make a difference in the adult community because of my granma, who was very arthritic and I used to go to her house after school to give her exercises for her articulations so she could be more mobile. I started seeing the results within a month of working with her and I saw the importance of physical activity for this age group which became my passion.
I never stopped since. I studied and worked hard and today with all my expertise I am specialized in working with individuals with very specific needs and the athletic individuals as well.
What types of students have you worked with?
Throughout my career, I had the opportunity to work with clients recovering from Knee replacement, hip replacement, shoulder surgeries, patients from Cardiovascular rehabilitation and post heart surgery, pre and post bariatric surgery clients and diabetic patients.
I feel very confident and am certified to work with Breast Cancer survivors.
I also work with clients for weight loss, improve bone density, muscular strength and balance.
All with excellent results.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had a client which I started working with after her Breast Cancer surgery to reabilitate the muscles and range of movement of the right side and right arm. This client also had a knee condition which we started a series of exercises to strengthen her hip and knee joints and muscles to get ready for a knee replacement requested by her doctor. She had a happy and fast recovery from the surgery thanks to all the strength work we did in her leg muscles and joints prior to surgery. She was so satisfied with the first knee surgery experience that she completed the second knee surgery after 4 months of the first knee surgery.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How serious are you about your fitness goals and how committed you are to the exercise program.
