The combination of healing and educational work of Somatics and fitness training is something unique to A Mindful Movement. We work to create a healthy balance in mind, body, and spirit. We are not just fitness training, we are a holistic fitness and wellness educator, focusing on the entire well-being of each student. Somatic movements are so critical to our long term health that they should be incorporated in all aspects of our life, including our fitness regimen. By incorporating Somatic movements into your fitness regimen, we will take you from pain to function to strength training through intelligent movements so that you can move with the freedom you had as a child.
Hanna Somatic Education is based on the work of Thomas Hanna, consisting of gentle and pain-free movements that reverse the effects of Sensory Motor Amnesia. These simple and common sense movements are unique to Hanna Somatic Education. Unlike passive treatment therapies, such as acupuncture, chiropractic, or massage Somatic Education teaches you the tools needed to address and repair the dysfunction in your body. Somatic movements improve the function of walking, running, exercise, and sports enhancement, and is the perfect compliment to any fitness regimen.
A personal fitness training session is comprised of restorative somatic movement and functional training with body weight, free weights, bars and bands, with exercises and movements focusing on core strength, balance, function and body wide movements.
During your sessions you will assess: Where am I today? What kind of stress do I have in my life today? What am I feeling in my body and why? How do I need to move? Then we will prepare your body for the work ahead, based on how you assessed your physical, mental and emotional state of being. We will practice movements and then become more playful with the movements or push yourself further.
After your workout is complete we will have time to reflect. This time of reflection is key to making lasting changes. If we do not reflect on our achievements it is easy to forget and for your brain to forget the changes it has made. This time is crucial to imprinting the changes you have made during your session, so that your brain can integrate the movements into your daily life. It is time to review what went well, what was challenging, what was new, what details will you want to pay closer attention to next time. How has the session impacted you on all levels of your being? And How has it impacted your other goals and life overall?
I love having the opportunity to teach people about their bodies. Giving them more confidence in their abilities and freedom in their movement. I like that each session is an exploration and in every session you have the opportunity to learn and feel something new within. My favorite thing is that people ask for more. When the movement is explorative, you want to keep moving to feel something new or to really get the grasp. I am not pushing you to do more repetitions, you desire to do more. I find that as people feel better, as movement and exercise feel better within their bodies, they naturally start to move more. It becomes less about having to exercise and more about getting to move your body. This experience is not about guilt or shame, it is about self-exploration and self-regulation. Learning to do more of feels good and listening to your body.

Alyx Arends is a Somatic Educator in the tradition of Thomas Hanna, and is currently studying Hanna Somatic Education at the Novato Institute for Somatic Research in Novato, CA. She is also a certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Her work is based off the belief that the more we move, the more life we have to live, but understands that chronic pain, tension, and general dis-ease in the mind and body can cause movement to stop or become restricted and painful. She believes that this chronic pain and tension are merely symptoms that manifest as a result of a disconnection from your true self, a disconnect of the body and mind. She uses her intuition, somatic education, and intentional movement and exercise to work with you as a whole person to uncover and identify embodied patterning caused by stress (positive and negative) in your life. Through Somatic education and intentional exercise, you can increase and restore your capacity for self-awareness, self-caring, and self-healing. By harnessing the power we all possess within, we can take control of our health, heal our body, and live vibrantly through neuromuscular re-education.
