Robert earned a degree in Exercise Science from Indiana University and spent his childhood and adolescence engaged in athletic activities, including football, basketball, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and Olympic lifting. He has always been enthused about working out, but it wasn’t until his brother Scott introduced him to CrossFit in 2008 that his passion for exercise and a healthy lifestyle was ignited. The results, fulfillment, and camaraderie that CrossFit offers inspired Robert to open his own box, CrossFit Blackbeard, in 2012. Even before earning his initial CrossFit certification, Robert spent much time developing plans for his own gym in anticipation of sharing his passion with others.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

We offer free introductory classes every Saturday at 10 AM for students interested in CrossFit-- and we can also arrange personalized one-on-one sessions by request. Before every single workout our coaches carefully review every movement in the given workout. If the workout calls for squats and jump roping, our coaches will demonstrate and have students practice squats and jump roping in a step-by-step fashion. In order to promote safety and a culture of learning, every movement is reviewed for every class-- regardless if a student is new or experienced. There is always more to learn and room for improvement!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science from Indiana University, and CrossFit Levels 1 and 2 certifications. I have been coaching CrossFit for 6 years, and have coached 8-10 hours/day for the last 4 years. All of our coaches at CrossFit Blackbeard have at minimum their CrossFit Level 1 certification, and many have additional certifications, including ISSA Certified Fitness Trainer, NASM Youth Exercise Specialist, P.E. teacher, and additional CrossFit certifications.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

All of our memberships include unlimited classes and are billed on a month-to-month basis at $135/month. We do offer 20% discounts for families, and the following professions with ID: militiary, first responder, nurses, teachers, and students. We also offer discounts for 3- and 6-month contracts.

How did you get started teaching?

The results, fulfillment, and camaraderie that CrossFit offers inspired me to open my own CrossFit box where I could share my enthusiasm for the sport with others.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with students of all ages-- elementary-aged children up to adults in the 70's. Those individuals have ranged from zero exercise experience to competitive-level athletes at the collegiate level.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

If the gym offers a free introductory class, try it! Trying a class at the gym will give you a better feel for the coaches in person, the environment, and the style of teaching than simply looking at a website's information. If you don't love the gym, try another! Every CrossFit is different, so find the best fit!
