About

2017 - 2024 coached high school team to league and state championships. I build the athlete, the tennis player and the individual into a real competitor. I grew up playing basketball every day of my life. Freshman year of college, I picked up a Prince racquet and now I am sponsored by Babolat. Tennis is more than a game. It is the sport of a lifetime.

For juniors it is a journey they will never forget as the game teaches you about yourself every time you hit the court. The money spent on tennis lessons IS NOT an expense. It is an INVESTMENT in your child's future.

For adults, it is magic to your well-being and the most trusted sport to add years to your life.

Shelby is very personable, motivating and dedicated to his athletes success both and off the court. Shelby has a great understanding of the game of tennis and knows how to impart his love of the game unto his students.

Shelby truly loves tennis, and he has committed his adult life in passing this love along to all the players he engages with. He has worked with my son since he was 7 years old, and he completely had my son loving tennis within his first week of training. My son now is a high performance tennis player and wishes to continue tennis into college. Shelby, and only Shelby, can be credited to sparking that interest in my son. Shelby using tennis to teach his young athletes about general principles of life, and importantly how to take a L and get back up even stronger than before. My son has mental toughness due to lessons learned from Shelby and we are so grateful for his influence on my son. We hope he keeps doing exactly what he is doing and continue to grow the next generation of tennis players in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area.

Coach Shelby is a kid whisperer! Hes amazing with both my kids one quiet/shy the other extremely motivated. My kids were at JTCC, but Coach Shelby is bar none above and beyond expectations for high performance junior training. Strategy, weakness, strengths, you name it, it will be possible with him! One thing we are not allowed to miss per my little 13 year old is Coach Shelbys practices! Hes a great guy, has a great tennis background and understands the game and our kids! Go try it out, you wont be sorry!

    Frequently asked questions

With new students I always first try to learn what type of athletic abilities they possess. After the athletic assessment is done, I introduce the player to the racquet, grips, the court and the basics of the modern forehand. After that, we will progress to the backhand, volleys and serves. After five lessons, the player will have a baseline from which to grow.

I was first certifed by the United States Professional Tennis Registry in 1999. It is now called the PTR. Thru the registry and USTA I am current with respect to all modern teaching and safety techniques to grow the game of tennis.

In my youth, played football, basketball and baseball. Basketball daily. Bad injurie curtailed growth in those sports. Picked up a racquet in my late teens and it's been my sport for a lifetime.

A coach is your window into athletics and this sport. Be certain that coach helps you see the big picture and treats you the right way. Lifes too short to deal with negativity energy on or off the court.
Be certain you have a vision for how tennis will be included in your life.
