What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In each JKD Phase Method class we train Functional Reality Based Self-Defense
against Impact Weapons (Rattan Sticks, Training Machetes), Edged Weapons (Training Knifes and
Karambits),"Aliveness" drills using Kicking Shield / Focus Mitts Drills, Sensitivity Drills (Trapping,
Hubud & Our "patented" Fungee Noodle Dummy "Mook Jong"), "Aliveness" drills utilizing Kicking
Shields and Focus Mitt Drills, Defang the Snake and Isolation Sparring, Grappling (Silat, Dumog,
Wrestling) and we also include / end with Gun-Defenses which is unique to our courses here. We seek
to keep in mind Situational Awareness and Multiple Opponent (Mass Attack) strategies and embedd
them within our Functional Training scenarios while adding Progressive Resistance and Stress
Inoculation within our training scenarios against resisting attackers who are trying to harm us in order
that you may build skills so that you can effectively defend yourself.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching in 1996 as a Taekwondo Instructor at a YMCA, a Gym and a TKD Kids Class Instructor.
What types of students have you worked with?
Some of my experience include running an After School Program at Kavod Charter School, being a UCSD Recreation Center Instructor, a Private Jewish Day School PE Coach (I taught TKD and Krav Maga), JKD/Kali Instructor and a Kids JKD/Kali Instructor, a Krav Maga Instructor at a Chabad Mens Club and a Martial Arts Gym, a Taekwondo Instructor at a YMCA, a Gym and a TKD Kids Class Instructor and Active Shooter Defense Instructor as well as experience doing Anti-Drug and Anti-Gang Martial Art Themed School Assemblies.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Yesterday I spent the day at Kavod Charter School talking to Parents as we are launching an After School Program for the Children and it was good talking to the Parents. There are a lot of parents who are interested in the benefits that Martial Arts training can provide their children.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Come to class prepared to learn and take time to train the material between classes. Bruce Lee expected that his students would find a training partner and train outside of classes. I do agree that is an amendable goal. It helps a lot towards progression and growth. I try to follow the instruction patterns of Sigung Bruce Lee and Tuhon Dan Inosanto.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Why do they want to train? What are they seeking to learn? And how can I help them accomplish their goals? And are there any Self-Defense realities or complexities that they have had a hard time with. I like to answer questions and try to solve complicated puzzles. I have a unique skillset and my students find my answers really useful.
