How did you get started teaching?
My journey began at a Bally’s Total Fitness in 2000.Went in for a trial pass for a membership.Another member asked me for some advice while I was on a machine and I proceeded to help him.A manager saw me in action and offered me a job.24 years,Several gyms later,I still love what I do.
What types of students have you worked with?
I’ve trained a couple thousand people. In Person,Group Fitness and Online. In my experience, there’s two kinds of students. Those who are open to change and those that are resistant.I have and will always work with them both.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Almost 6 years ago,I met and started working with my oldest client,Helen.Had never, ever worked out.86 years old.Was afraid of gyms.Found them intimidating.Didnt even know what to workout IN.Showed up for her first session in a SUIT. After a lot of great work and patience, she takes pride in whipping out her weightlifting gloves at the gym and telling her peers how much she bench presses.I remember, the day she was in such awe after carrying her 5 lbs water cooler bottles into her house by herself.I LIVE for that.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Be ready to listen.Be ready to learn.Pushing back creates drag.Ask lots of questions.Understand that avoiding discomfort will work against you reaching your goals.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Ask yourself…
What would I like to see when I get to my goal?
Why?
