STEPS Fitness
About
STEPS was Nashville's, Tennessee's and middle America's first exclusively-personal training center in 1989. Started by me, a Ph.D. in exercise science from Vanderbilt-Peabody University, and subsequently certified by the NSCA (personal trainer, strength and conditioning specialist, special populations specialist) and ACSM (Exercise physiology), we have cultivated a science-based program among the trainers here, current with the latest research and principles. We have all the latest equipment but not the latest fads. If it's not been validated or if it does not stand on the merits of scientific foundations, we generally do not do it. In other words, safety and effectiveness matter more than what the mass media is calling 'cool'.
I come to work to meet up with my friends, spend 30- 60 minutes communicating, learning, sharing, and helping them get in shape to lead more fulfilling and fruitful lives at all levels of functionality. I say 'friends' because the personal relationship is meaningful both to me as a professional and as a human being. But it also matters that the client sees me as a reliable, trustworth, credible, caring, attentive person and professional, i.e. a friend (with boundaries, of course.)
Furthermore, as a science geek, I enjoy keeping abreast of the most important and relevant health and fitness research, then applying it to my clients' needs. So not only do I enjoy working with the individuals; I enjoy learning from them and from the literature to make all our lives more fulfilling and fruitful
